The 39th Tactical Group was activated on 1 April 1966 to control tactical range support activities at the base involving visiting USAFE fighter aircraft. During the 1970s the group was responsible for Det. 10 TUSLOG (Turkey/US Logistics). The unit was retitled to the 39th Tactical Air Control Group in 1983 before becoming a Tactical Group in 1984. The 39th was upgraded to wing standard in 1993 to support the large number of combat aircraft in residence for Operation Provide Comfort.
